FRUITA, CO – Officers from the Fruita Police Department, in response to a call from a woman claiming that her boyfriend was threatening her with a handgun, arrived at the scene and shortly thereafter shot and killed the adult male subject last night. The incident occurred shortly before midnight at an apartment complex in the 1100 block of E Carolina Avenue.
Hollie Dalenberg, a resident of the apartment complex, lives in a second-floor unit with her family and was awakened by the commotion.
“I thought maybe people were fighting,” Dalenberg said. “I went back to sleep, then around 11:30 or so, I walked around the house to make sure kids are okay. I couldn’t figure out what was going on, then I went back to bed. Then I woke up again when the shots went off.”
Dalenberg said she heard six shots fired. “I heard a woman wailing and screaming, ‘You shot him! You shot him! He’s dead!'”
She said that she had heard the police yell at the man, prior to the shooting. “The cops said, ‘We know you’re in there. Hey, we need to talk to you, we’re not going to hurt you. We’re not going to kill you.'”
Dalenberg said she’s furious at how the situation was handled. “That’s what like made me really mad. The cops were firing, hopefully at their target, which also was really shitty because [there are] so many families and kids in the area. And they’re having a gun battle in the parking lot.”
The Grand Junction Police Department issued a statement this morning on their blog announcing that an investigation is under way by the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team. The deceased has not yet been identified, and the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.
Anyone with information and/or camera footage of the incident are asked to contact the Grand Junction Police Department at (970) 549-5200.
