Commissioner McInnis says it’s “defamation” to refer to officer-involved shootings as “murder”

GRAND JUNCTION, CO — Commissioner Scott McInnis issued a statement during this morning’s weekly county commissioners’ meeting decrying what he called “factually incorrect comments.”

McInnis was referring to statements recently made by various individuals — he did not specify who — referring to law enforcement-involved shootings that resulted in the killings of four civilians as “murders”.

He said that the Critical Incident Response Team, which is a multi-agency group assigned to investigate officer-involved incidents that result in fatalities or severe injuries, conducts these investigations because “no agency conducts any investigation of its own officers”.

“To state that any [law enforcement officer-related] deaths are murders are defamation” of these officers “who are doing a very difficult job,” McInnis said.
